Frauen beim Militär

At the museum, I often tell people that I chose to do a memorial service instead of the mandatory military service for men in Austria. "What about women?", I am sometimes asked. They don't. "Why?" Umm... and I never know what to tell them without making Austria look really backward. Quoting our Minister of National Defense doesn't help ("because it's always been like that"). So what do I tell them?
